Skin rejuvenation is a non-invasive treatment that emits powerful bursts of light energy to treat sun-damaged skin, wrinkles and some skin problems (rosacea, acne scars, hemangiomas). Unlike laser therapy, the IPL device can generate light energy at various frequencies in order to treat different skin problems. Certain frequencies can destroy dark skin regions, while other frequencies will increase the melanin in your skin to re-pigment it.

The ideal candidate for IPL is someone with light skin who has sun damage, broken capillaries, and some laxity or lack of firmness, and wants to treat all three conditions at the same time. IPL is sometimes referred to as a photo facial, and is not the same as a laser treatment.

This treatment can encourage new collagen growth to tighten and rejuvenate the skin, while diminishing the appearance of:

  • Fine wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Brown spots
  • Acne scars
  • Broken capillaries
  • Rosacea
  • Visible birthmarks

Common IPL treatment complications:

  • Painful – but numbing cream can be applied to minimise discomfort
  • Redness
  • Slightly fluffy skin
  • Can sometimes blister the skin
  • In some patients, reactivation of previous herpes simplex cold sore

How IPL works
IPL uses short blasts of a polychromatic (multicoloured), high-intensity light to penetrate just below the skin’s surface, damaging either the melanin that makes up brown “age spots” or the blood vessels that create broken capillaries. The skin repairs the damage, leaving you with a more even skin tone

IPL uses intense blasts of light and heat, and both can be uncomfortable to painful, depending on the treatment, skin type and condition, and pain tolerance. Cooling gel is applied on the skin prior to treatment and cooling devices are also built into the machine. Some patients describe the IPL as feeling “like a rubber band snapping,” but there is heat involved and it can be more uncomfortable than that, but the feeling fades after an hour or so.

It generally takes a series of treatments to see the best results, perhaps three to six appointments, usually with a month between each.
