Reticular veins are larger than spider veins. They appear as greenish blue twisting lines and are 2mm to 3mm wide. They are most often found behind the knees and on the outside of the legs, but can also appear on the face, chest and breasts.

In patients with fair complexion and thin transparent skin, normal veins are often visible to the naked eyes. These should be differentiated from reticular veins.

Many patients complain of itching and a burning sensation in the area of reticular veins. Occasionally reticular veins cause pain, and they may bleed, which is the cause of an overlying spider web.
