Intrauterine Devices IUDs

Intrauterine Device (IUDs) Insertion (IUDs) in Jumeirah, Dubai

(Intrauterine Devices) These are small, plastic devices that your gynecologist will insert into your uterus. The procedure is simple and quick, although a little uncomfortable. Once it’s in position, the IUD will protect you from pregnancy for a long time. It is an intrauterine device used to prevent pregnancy in long-term. It can be either hormonal or non-hormonal.

Paragard is T-shaped, and it is inserted in the uterus, and is made up of copper. The copper creates an inflammatory response that is toxic to the sperms, hence preventing pregnancy. It is inserted for 10 years and is effective for the same period.

Reason why IUD Insertion is done

  • An IUD insertion is done to prevent unwanted pregnancy.
  • If you decide you want to get pregnant, you can get it removed at any time
  • Hormonal IUDs can cut down on cramps and make your period way lighter.
  • Elimination of interruption of sexual activity
  • Stays for 10 years hence long-lasting
  • It is safe for breastfeeding
  • No side effects such as blood clots,
  • Can be emergency if placed within 5 days of sexual intercourse

Women discouraged to use the IUD include:

  • Uterine anomalies such as fibroids,
  • Pelvic conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Uterine or cervical cancer
  • Bleeding from the vagina without any cause
  • Allergy to the ParaGard
  • Disorders that increase copper accumulation in other body organs such as Wilson’s disease

Risks of doing IUD Insertion

Only 1% of women who use ParaGard get pregnant within the first one year. It does not protect from sexually transmitted infections. In case one gets pregnant with the device in situ, the higher the chances of having an ectopic pregnancy.

Side effects include bleeding that is increased, strong pain during menses and heavy bleeding.

The IUD may also be expelled from the body. Conditions leading to expulsion of the IUD Insertion include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Long and intense menstrual periods
  • Strong pains during the menses
  • A history of an expelled IUD
  • Below 25 years of age
  • IUD insertion after birth

How to prepare for IUD Insertion

Before getting an IUD Insertion, a woman can speak to her doctor about which type is best for them. IUDs come in two forms:

  • The copper IUD: This version of the device kills sperm, preventing it from fertilizing an egg.
  • The hormonal IUD: This type of device releases progestin, which is very similar to progesterone, a hormone the body manufactures itself.

It can be inserted at any time of the menstrual cycle. After childbirth it is recommended it is inserted 8 weeks after childbirth to reduce the chances of expulsion. A pregnancy test is done and a test for STI before inserting the IUD. NSAIDs intake 2 hours before the procedure reduces pain.

What We Can Do

During the IUD Insertion Procedure

A vaginal speculum is inserted in the vagina, and the cervix and vagina are cleaned with an antiseptic. The cervical canal is aligned using an instrument to ensure it is well-aligned. The IUD is placed in the applicator, the applicator is then placed into the uterus and the IUD gets into place, the applicator is then removed. Threads from the IUD are trimmed and tucked into the cervix.

After the IUD Insertion Procedure

One needs to go back to the clinic after a month to ensure the IUD was properly inserted.

Below are warning signs when one has an IUD:

  • Signs and symptoms of pregnancy
  • Fever with no cause
  • Exposure to STIs
  • Abdominal pain that is severe and painful to touch
  • Pelvic pain that is worsening
