Causes of Thyroid Disease

The cause of the cancer is unknown, but results from mutation of normal thyroid cells. Mutation of the cells creates increased growth and the cells change to be a tumor. When not noted earlier they become cancerous and can spread to other body parts.

Thyroid cancer types

Thyroid lymphoma: It is a rare type; it is more common in elderly clients and is due to disorders of the immune system increasing the growth of thyroid cells.
Anaplastic Thyroid cancer: It is a rare type of cancer too, and very difficult to treat.
Medullary thyroid cancer: It starts in the c cells; the c cells are tasked with producing calcitonin hormone. The cancer increases the functioning of the c cells, hence an increased hormonal level in the blood due to the cancer.
Follicular thyroid cancer: It comes from the thyroid follicle cells. It is an aggressive type of cancer.
Papillary thyroid cancer: It is the most common of thyroid cancers. It affects people of all ages.

Risk factors

  • Females are more at risk as compared to male.
  • Genetic syndromes.
  • Radiation exposure.

Thyroid Treatment

Hypothyroidism calls for a lifelong regimen of thyroid replacement. No surgical techniques, alternative medicine, or conventional drugs can increase the thyroid’s hormone production once it slows down. Thyroid doctors generally prescribe synthetic forms of thyroid hormone, such as levothyroxine. The thyroid treatment for a nodule that’s cancerous usually involves a surgery.

What You Can Do

  • In case one is in a family with a history of thyroid cancer one needs to be checked regularly.
  • One needs to seek for Potassium Iodide if one leaves in an area near a radiation site. The Potassium Iodide reduces the effects of radiation on the thyroid.

What We Can Do

Thyroid treatment options depend on the type of thyroid nodule you have.

  • Performing a physical examination and history: it is important to determine the thyroid location, size and any exposure to radiations from history, and also family history of thyroid cancer.
  • Thyroid gland functioning is determined by blood tests.
  • A fine needle biopsy is done to the thyroid gland then the sample is tested. The biopsy is guided by an ultrasound to ensure it gets the perfect location. The sample taken is tested for cancer or any other abnormal cells.
  • CT tests, ultrasound and PET scans are imaging tests that are performed to determine the extent of the cancer.
  • Genetic testing is done to determine whether certain markers are present in the blood and thus exposing one to cancer.
  • Surgery is also done thyroidectomy, lymph node removal from the neck and lobectomy of a thyroid lobe.
  • Our clinic in Dubai offers thyroid hormone therapy to people who have had a thyroidectomy to replace the hormonal functions of the thyroid.
  • Radiation therapy is offered to cancer treatment to help counter the cancer cell growth.
