Prolonged heavy menstrual bleeding is referred to as menorrhagia. It is increased blood loss through the vagina.

These signs and symptoms are usually enough to tell most women that they’ve started the abnormal menstrual bleeding.

Seek an immediate treatment for abnormal menstrual bleeding if you experience the above symptoms.

Causes of abnormal menstrual bleeding

There are several reasons that could lead to abnormal menstrual bleeding in women:

Unknown causes:  In some cases, the cause of menorrhagia is unknown.

Hormone imbalance: Hormones need to regulate the menstrual cycle ensuring the uterine lining does not over build up. Estrogen and progesterone are tasked with regulation of uterine growth. Uncontrolled hormone builds up leads to excessive shedding which in turn leads to an increased bleeding. Conditions leading to hormonal imbalance include thyroid issues, polycystic ovarian syndrome and obesity.

Dysfunctional ovaries: Anovulation is the lack of release of an ovum by an ovary which leads to progesterone absence creating hormonal imbalance hence menorrhagia.

Uterine fibroids: They are benign non-cancerous growths in the uterine layer which increases bleeding from the uterus.

Polyps: They are benign growths in the uterus leading to an increased menstrual period.

Adenomyosis: Endometrial gland tissues get to the uterine muscles leading to increased menstrual flow and pain.

Intrauterine device: Non-hormonal IUD side effect is menorrhagia

Pregnancy complications: A low-lying placenta can lead to bleeding. Heavy, single and late period may be a miscarriage

Cancer: Uterine cancer or cervical cancers are accompanied by excess bleeding

Inherited bleeding conditions: An example of condition is Von Willebrand’s disease, which is a defect of clotting factors, hence increasing bleeding.

Medications: Some medications increase bleeding such as anti-inflammatory drugs.
