Cold knife cone biopsy is a surgical procedure used to remove tissue from the cervix. The cervix is the narrow part of the lower end of the uterus and terminates in the vagina. Cold knife cone biopsy is also called conization. This cone biopsy procedure removes a large cone-shaped piece of the cervix to look for precancerous cells, or cancerous material. Cold knife cone biopsy is performed under a general or regional anesthetic. The surgeon uses a scalpel to remove the cervical tissue.

It is an extensive method of performing cervical biopsy. The biopsy obtained is in a cone shaped from the cervix. Additionally, it is retrieved from the highest point of the cervix. It is used to get abnormal cells and diagnose conditions in the cervix.

How it is done

Cold knife cone biopsy is an outpatient procedure all one needs is to walk into the hospital. Instructions on what to expect during and after the procedure are passed across by a health care provider. One takes clothes off past the waist, then draped with a towel. One lies on the back and raises their legs on stirrups. A vaginal speculum is inserted in the vagina to visualize the cervix. Anaesthesia may be used to allow obtaining the specimen easily.

What We Can Do

Recovery takes 1 to 4 hours after the cold knife cone biopsy procedure. One needs to rest before they are released to go home. Normal activity is restored after a week of the procedure. Regular pap smears are scheduled.

After a cone biopsy

  • Vaginal bleeding is expected for the first 1 week
  • Vaginal spotting can occur the first 3 weeks
  • Tampons should not be used, pads are recommended
  • For 3 weeks, sex should be avoided
  • Douching should be avoided
