What You Can Do

There are several ways to avoid or reduce the risk of sexually transmitted disease (STD) such as:

  • Practicing safe sexual intercourse such as consistent use of condoms which reduces the chances of body fluid interaction.
  • Testing for HIV and STI as a couple
  • Maintaining one sexual partner. Multiple sexual partners increase the risk of STI.
  • Rape management. After rape, despite the stigma one needs to report the issue and seek treatment and STI screening early enough to get treated and counselled.
  • Pregnant women need to attend ANC visits hence testing for syphilis. It reduces the chances of mother to child transmission.
  • Limiting alcohol intake. Increased use of drugs and alcohol affects judgment leading to unhealthy behavior.
  • Avoid needle sharing. Needle sharing when using intravenous drugs causes the spread of Hepatitis B and C and HIV.
  • Abstain from sex and let the STI heal properly and then practice safe sexual encounters.
  • Wait and verify. Before having a sexual encounter with a partner ensure they are tested and then get involved sexually.
  • Get vaccinated before any sexual encounter. HPV, Hepatitis A and B have vaccines to protect people against the infections. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, both girls and boys aged 11 and 12 need to be vaccinated against HPV which is just before their first sexual encounter. If the vaccination is not complete, one needs to be vaccinated at the age of 26.
